Why Ocarina of Time's Classic Designs Don't Work in Modern Graphics
Nintendo producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi explains why some N64 designs look creepy when recreated with today's technology.
★ 7.2manhwa.newsUpdating a classic title comes with its own set of hurdles. While fans often hope for a direct visual upgrade, Nintendo producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi recently explained that simply recreating the original character designs from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for modern systems is not as straightforward as it seems.
The original game relied on specific visual exaggerations to accommodate the limitations of the Nintendo 64 hardware. According to Fujibayashi, applying those same proportions to modern, high definition models creates an uncanny effect. Instead of looking faithful to the original, the characters ended up looking quite creepy when rendered with today's technology.
This artistic challenge highlights the careful balance developers must maintain when revisiting beloved titles. Moving forward, the team is focused on finding the right middle ground that preserves the spirit of the 1998 classic without triggering that unintended unsettling look.
