Navi Almost Looked Human in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Every fan of The Legend of Zelda remembers Navi, the glowing light that guides Link through his journey in Ocarina of Time. While she is iconic as a floating ball of light, her design was originally going to look quite different. Designer Yoshiaki Koizumi shared that he first imagined Navi as a cute, human like girl.

Technical limits on the Nintendo 64 forced the team to rethink their approach. Creating a full human character for a helper role was difficult for the hardware at the time. To save resources, the team decided to pivot toward the simple light based design that players recognize today.

It is interesting to wonder how the game would have felt with a human companion tagging along. Even though the design changed, Navi remains one of the most famous characters in gaming history. Fans can still appreciate how these hardware restrictions helped shape the unique aesthetic of such a classic title.
