Why a Dune II Re Release is Nearly Impossible
Fans hoping to replay the classic strategy game Dune II face a massive roadblock involving tangled corporate rights.
★ 7.2manhwa.newsGetting a modern re release of the legendary strategy game Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty is proving to be a huge challenge. Marcin Paczynski, who works as a senior business development and partnerships manager at GOG, recently explained the situation in an interview. He revealed that bringing the game back to digital storefronts is very difficult because the rights are split among several different companies.
The situation is messy because Electronic Arts owns the actual game code and assets after buying Westwood Studios years ago. However, owning the code is not enough. EA does not control all the intellectual property rights required to legally distribute the title to modern players today.
Several other stakeholders are involved in the rights puzzle, including Universal, Legendary Pictures, and the developers behind Dune: Awakening. Because so many parties hold different pieces of the puzzle, sorting out the agreements takes a tremendous amount of time and effort.
For strategy fans, this news means a digital re release is unlikely to happen anytime soon. While platforms like GOG are always eager to rescue classic games, untangling this specific corporate web might take a very long time.
