The Doll (2026) Has Great Potential But Feels Too Short

The 2026 adaptation of The Doll brings Boleslaw Prus' famous 19th century novel to a modern audience on Netflix. The story follows Izabela, a sharp and independent aristocrat who rejects the traditional expectations of her social class to pursue her own writing career. While her family struggles with heavy debt, she finds herself pressured by the social climbing merchant Stanislaw, who sees her as a prize to elevate his own status.

Sandra Drzymalska delivers a standout performance as Izabela. She captures the character's bold and calculating nature perfectly, making the moments where she shows true vulnerability feel deeply impactful. The production design is another highlight. Joanna Macha and costume designer Dorota Roqueplo create a visually stunning version of Warsaw that feels real, grounded, and far from the stiff, fake look of many other period dramas.

Unfortunately, the show struggles to fit all of its ambitions into just six episodes. It tries to cover social class dynamics, political intrigue, and personal revenge all at once, which makes the pacing feel rushed. Because of this, the chemistry between the leads is hard to believe, and secondary characters do not get the screen time they deserve. It is a well made project, but it ends far too soon to fully capture the weight of the original story.
