Eiichiro Oda Saved Usopp's Introduction in One Piece Live Action
The live action One Piece team almost cut Syrup Village until Eiichiro Oda stepped in.
★ 9.1manhwa.newsFans of the One Piece live action series have former showrunner Steve Maeda to thank for a major save. During a recent interview on the Trash Taste Podcast, Maeda shared that the production team nearly scrapped the entire Syrup Village arc. Budget constraints from Netflix executives led the team to consider replacing Usopp’s iconic introduction with a shorter sequence involving Gaimon’s Island.
This change would have drastically altered the early story flow of the show. Syrup Village is essential because it serves as the origin for Usopp and provides the crew with their first ship, the Going Merry. Removing it would have left a massive gap in the narrative and changed how viewers connect with the Straw Hat crew.
Thankfully, series creator Eiichiro Oda stood his ground. Oda insisted that Syrup Village remain a part of the season. His influence ensured that the show stayed true to the spirit of the original manga. It is a great reminder of how important Oda remains to the success of this adaptation.
