TIFF 2026: Arrested Memory Movie Review and Highlights

Memory loss can be a terrifying thing, turning a person upside down and pushing them into dangerous situations. In SABU's new movie Arrested Memory, a detective faces this exact struggle taken to an absurd extreme. The film recently played at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, giving fans a mix of dark comedy and police procedural drama that does not always hold together smoothly.

The story follows Captain Lee, played by Ethan Juan, who deals with minor bouts of memory loss while still leading cases. Brain fog soon overwhelms him during a critical meetup, leading to tragedy for his team. Even so, the police force sends him back out with a new crew to track down the kidnapping of a Japanese businessman's son, played by Shin’ichi Tsutsumi. The resulting police incompetence leads to some of the funniest comedic beats in the entire story.

Ethan Juan keeps the project from going off the rails with a powerful performance that captures the quiet terror of losing one's identity. While the action scenes and some side characters feel a bit disjointed, the dark comedy elements shine through brightly. Fans of quirky crime stories will find plenty to enjoy when this unique film hits broader audiences.
