Saw: Genesis Brings Twisted Traps to Multiplayer Horror

Bloober Team is gearing up to shake up the asymmetrical horror scene with their upcoming title, Saw: Genesis. While games like Dead by Daylight currently dominate the genre, this new project aims to stand out by focusing on the core philosophy of the Saw franchise. Instead of typical jump scares, the team is focusing on the fragile yet terrifying nature of a villain who relies on motivation and elaborate traps rather than pure supernatural strength.

Set one hundred years before the events of the films, the game takes place in post World War I Europe. The developers chose this era because the chaos of rebuilding provided a perfect environment for their antagonists to operate undetected. The setting also allows for a unique aesthetic, featuring raw, rugged, and massive machinery that feels distinctly different from the high tech gadgets seen in modern horror stories.

The gameplay itself encourages players to fight back rather than just hide in a closet. In a recent hands on session, survivors were seen scavenging for weapons to fend off the Judge. This shift from running away to active resistance creates a tense atmosphere where overconfidence can lead to quick isolation. When players are caught, they face grim, personal choices, such as sacrificing their own health or limbs to escape a trap.

Creative director Damian Kocurek noted that the first person perspective is essential to capturing the true spirit of the series. By placing the player directly in the victim's shoes, the game forces them to decide exactly how much they are willing to suffer to survive. It is a bold approach that looks to turn the genre on its head by turning the player's own survival instinct into the ultimate game mechanic.
