Lanterns Season 1 Is a Fresh and Gritty Take on DC Heroes

The iconic Green Lantern oath has been around since 1943, but the new series Lanterns gives fans a perspective we have never seen before. Showrunner Chris Mundy shifts away from previous adaptations to present a grounded, gritty story that feels more like a serious crime drama than a typical superhero show. While some DC projects have struggled to find the right balance with a darker tone, this series makes it feel purposeful and necessary for the story being told.

The narrative unfolds across two different decades. In 2016, Hal Jordan and his trainee John Stewart deal with a dangerous threat in Nebraska. Flash forward to 2026, and the show shifts into a tense murder investigation after a tragic discovery. While the split timeline is an ambitious idea, the pacing occasionally stumbles when the show jumps between these two periods, leading to some frustrating plot holes and questionable logic regarding the rules of the Power Ring.

Despite a few narrative hiccups, the show succeeds because of its incredible cast. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre have fantastic chemistry as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Chandler portrays multiple versions of Hal with impressive nuance, capturing everything from cynical exhaustion to youthful wit. Pierre brings a grounded intensity to John Stewart that keeps the audience hooked. Supported by great performances from Poorna Jagannathan and Shea Pritchard, the characters feel like real people with complex motivations.

At the end of the day, Lanterns offers a refreshing look at these classic characters. It may not be perfect, but it is an entertaining and emotional ride that gives its leads the depth they deserve. If you are looking for a DC story that treats its heroes with care and provides a bold, character driven mystery, this show is well worth a watch.
