Gangs of Gotham Issue 1 Review: Gritty Street Level Action
DC Comics brings us Gangs of Gotham Issue 1, a gritty and slow paced crime story starring Anarky.
manhwa.newsDC Comics has launched Gangs of Gotham Issue 1, written by Christopher Cantwell with art by Mike Henderson, colors by Trish Mulvihill, and letters by Becca Carey. Set after the Bad Seeds crossover, this story picks up while criminal factions try to fill the power vacuum left behind in the city. The plot acts as a sequel to the Gotham Central tie in, so newcomers might find the opening a bit confusing to follow.
Lonnie Machin, also known as Anarky, takes the lead role in this gritty new series. He starts the story with just a quarter to his name, highlighting just how far he must climb in this dangerous underworld. The pacing is slow and methodical, focusing heavily on character struggles and a massive conspiracy. The narrative unfolds through a letter written by Anarky to Batman, showing his defiance and vulnerability as he goes up against cops and criminals alike.
The art team does a fantastic job bringing the East End of Gotham to life with run down locations and intense brawls. Because there are no metahumans involved, every injury matters and the action feels raw and grounded. Anarky stands out in his bright red hoodie, making it impossible for him to hide in the shadows. Gangs of Gotham Issue 1 is available now at comic book shops for fans of gritty street level crime stories.
