Bass X Machina Review: Netflix Gives A Western Legend A Steampunk Makeover

Bass X Machina is the newest original animated series from Netflix, bringing an action packed steampunk twist to the legendary life of Bass Reeves. Executive produced by LeSean Thomas, Brian Tyree Henry, Jennifer Wiley Moxley, and Chad Handley, with animation handled by Studio Mir, the show stars a talented voice cast including Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monaé, and Tati Gabrielle. Set in an alternate post Civil War America, the story follows Bass as a bounty hunter facing outlaws, machines, and supernatural threats while trying to protect his family.

The series stands out right away thanks to its striking blend of science fiction, western aesthetics, and steampunk technology. Studio Mir delivers incredible detail during fight sequences, seamlessly mixing classic gunfights with mechs and supernatural powers. Bass himself wields a steam powered prosthetic arm that doubles as a weapon. Alongside the great action, the show tackles heavy themes by weaving real historical events like the Civil War and the Trail of Tears into its fictional setting, showing how new technology does not always cure old prejudices.

While the six episode run moves very fast and leaves some character backstories feeling a bit rushed, the storytelling and animation remain strong from start to finish. Fans of unique action animation and creative history retellings will find plenty to enjoy here. Hopefully, future seasons will get more time to expand on the fascinating supporting cast and their origins.
