WEGO Cancels My Hero Academia Line Due to Backlash

Japanese fashion retailer WEGO recently announced the total cancellation of its upcoming My Hero Academia collaboration. The clothing line featured newly drawn art of popular characters including Izuku Midoriya, Katsuki Bakugo, and Ochaco Uraraka. Fans were initially excited when the partnership was revealed on September 7, with the items scheduled to go on sale later in the month.

However, intense backlash from fans in China forced the brand to pull the plug. The issue arose because the merchandise release date was set for September 18, a date historically tied to Japan's 1931 invasion. This sensitive historical connection sparked immediate anger online, leading WEGO to issue a cancellation notice on September 12.

This sudden change leaves fans disappointed who were looking forward to the exclusive character merchandise. It highlights how sensitive historical dates can heavily impact merchandise rollouts in international markets. As of now, WEGO has not announced if the collection will be redesigned or released at a later date.
