The Reason Hayao Miyazaki Made a Totoro Sequel

Fans of My Neighbor Totoro might be surprised to learn about a short film sequel titled Mei and the Baby Cat Bus. While Hayao Miyazaki is not known for making sequels to his classic works, he made an exception for this project. The decision was not driven by corporate pressure but by his own fondness for one particular character.

Former Studio Ghibli executive Steve Alpert recently shared the story behind the production. He explained that Miyazaki was initially reluctant to revisit the story. However, he eventually changed his mind after being reminded how much he enjoyed drawing the iconic Catbus. This simple passion for the character was enough to get the legendary director back to work on the short.

The short film expands on the world established in the 1988 classic, offering a rare glimpse into the life of the feline vehicle. It serves as a fun treat for longtime fans who always wondered about the creatures seen in the original movie.
