I recently had the chance to play The Defiant at Gamescom, and it immediately felt like a blast from the past. It captures the spirit of early Call of Duty titles, focusing on intense, grounded combat that prioritizes historical settings over modern gimmicks. The game trades the usual Pacific fronts for the Japanese invasion of China, providing a perspective that games rarely cover.

The gameplay feels familiar and responsive, utilizing the classic stop and pop mechanics that defined the genre in the mid 2000s. From the snappy weapon handling to the way your health regenerates behind cover, the game nails the tension of the era. You are constantly moving, flanking, and holding positions while your AI teammates push the linear path forward.

Visually, the game is stunning. The environments are filled with detailed destruction, from snowy trenches to shattered houses. The sound design makes every firefight feel weighty and dangerous. It is a linear experience, but the AI is clever enough to keep you on your toes as they attempt to flank your position.

While the demo was a challenging experience that pushed me to restart several times, it left a strong impression. The Defiant feels like a polished love letter to a bygone era of shooters. I am excited to see more of this story as the developers continue to refine this historical journey.
