The Assassin(s) Brings Historical Tension to TIFF 2026

Director Hur Jin ho is bringing his latest project, The Assassin(s), to the Toronto International Film Festival this September. The film focuses on the 1974 assassination attempt against South Korean president Park Chung Hee. It follows three distinct characters who find themselves caught in a dangerous web of government secrets and political instability during a dark time in the nation's history.

The story unfolds through the eyes of an outspoken newspaper editor played by Park Hae il, a loyal police officer portrayed by Yoo Hae jin, and a young reporter played by Lee Min ho. Each man deals with the fallout of the conspiracy in his own way, highlighting the personal cost of seeking the truth when the state is watching every move. Yoo Hae jin provides a standout performance, effectively showing a man whose faith in his country slowly breaks down as the conspiracy deepens.

Technically, the film succeeds in recreating the atmosphere of the 1970s with detailed sets, costumes, and cinematography that uses light and shadow to heighten the sense of paranoia. The pacing remains tight for most of the film, keeping the mystery engaging and unpredictable as the three protagonists navigate their own missions.

While the final act struggles with pacing issues and introduces extra plot elements that feel a bit heavy, the film remains a compelling watch. The strong performances and the weight of the historical setting make it a project worth checking out. The Assassin(s) will have its world premiere at TIFF on September 16, 2026.
