The Anime Industry Is Breaking Records But Studios Are Struggling
While the anime market hits a massive new peak, more than half of the companies behind our favorite shows are actually losing money.
manhwa.newsThe Japanese anime industry just reached a record high with a market value of 3.8 trillion yen in 2024. It is exciting to see how much the medium has grown, but the money is not spread out evenly. While the total market size is impressive, the reality for many production studios is quite different.
New data shows that over half of these companies, specifically 53.5 percent, are reporting lower profits or financial losses. Even though fans everywhere are watching more anime than ever, the rise in costs for labor and technology is hitting studios hard.
International demand is a huge reason for the industry growth, but it is not helping everyone equally. With nearly 46 percent of companies managing to increase their profits, it is clear that many studios are still finding it difficult to stay in the black despite the global popularity of their work.
