Take Charge of My Heart Review: A Promising Rom Com Fumbles

Take Charge of My Heart brings together two stars we love, Kim Young kwang and Chae Soo bin, for a premise that feels fresh and fun. Kim plays Baek Ho rang, a successful heir to a conglomerate who suffers from a failing artificial heart. He crosses paths with Na Bo bae, a writer who accidentally gained the ability to generate electricity after being struck by lightning. Since she cannot touch anyone without shocking them, she lives a lonely life, but she soon discovers that she is the only person who can charge Ho rang's heart without causing harm.

The show begins as a delightful, contract based romance that feels like a classic rom com hit. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and watching them navigate their unusual situation offers plenty of humor and genuine heart. Chae Soo bin is a standout here, bringing a fire and self respect to her role that feels refreshing compared to typical genre tropes. She carries much of the emotional weight of the story, making her character easy to root for throughout the series.

However, the drama struggles to maintain its charm as it progresses. Midway through, the plot becomes bogged down by excessive chaebol politics, kidnapping arcs, and unnecessary melodrama that takes the focus away from the main couple. While the leads do their best, the thin writing for Ho rang makes his character feel stagnant, and the show eventually buckles under the weight of its own chaotic subplots.

Ultimately, the show is only worth watching for the moments shared between the two leads. It is a shame that such a unique concept and two talented actors were hindered by a script that prioritized check box tropes over a consistent narrative. If you enjoy character driven performances, it might be worth a look, but expect a messy ride that forgets to focus on what made it special in the first place.
