Suzuki=Bakudan Is a Gripping Crime Thriller You Cannot Miss

Suzuki=Bakudan recently premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and it is already making waves as a must watch crime thriller. The story begins with a simple arrest that quickly spirals out of control when the detainee, Tagosaku Suzuki, predicts a bomb will detonate in Tokyo. When his claim turns out to be true, the police are forced into a dangerous game of riddles to stop a series of hourly explosions.

Jiro Sato delivers an incredible performance as Suzuki. He manages to be both charming and deeply unsettling, acting as a master manipulator who knows exactly how to push the buttons of the detectives questioning him. The film pits two different investigative styles against him, as the by the book detective Kiyomiya faces off against the more reckless and unconventional profiler Ruike.

While the movie has a few moments where the mystery asks for a lot of suspension of disbelief, the constant tension keeps you glued to the screen. Beyond the action, the story offers a sharp critique of how society treats people it deems expendable. It is a thought provoking and high stakes thriller that stays with you long after the final credits roll.
