Sony Eyes Contactless Payments for PlayStation Controllers

Sony recently filed a patent that could change how we buy games on PlayStation consoles. The idea involves a controller that can accept payment information from devices held near it. This means you might be able to pay for your next game just by tapping a phone or a credit card against your controller.

The patent is officially titled Video Game Controller Driven Information Transfer. It suggests that users could avoid typing in long credit card numbers or account details on the screen. Instead, the console would communicate with your payment method using proximity technology.

While this is still just a patent filing from March 2025, it shows that Sony is thinking about ways to make the checkout process faster. We do not know if or when this technology will actually reach our gaming setups, but it is an interesting look at the future of console shopping.
