Review: LEGO One Piece Playfully Recaps The Live Action

LEGO One Piece brings Eiichiro Oda's iconic shonen series to life in a fun, brick built format. The two part animated special features the original live action cast reprising their roles. Iñaki Godoy returns as Monkey D. Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. Colton Osorio also joins as Young Luffy.

The story is framed by Usopp regaling Chopper with exaggerated tales of how the crew came together. This framing device fits Usopp's character perfectly and allows for plenty of playful and goofy humor. While the brisk pacing forces the special to cut a lot of story to fit two 33 minute episodes, it successfully hits the big emotional moments and serves as a great introduction for younger audiences.

The LEGO aesthetic shines through with over the top physical comedy and vibrant visual gags. Action sequences like Zoro fighting Mihawk are animated with great intensity and fluid movement. Adults will also find plenty to enjoy, thanks to subtle jokes and the pure joy of seeing familiar characters in LEGO form.
