Review: Digger Delivers Gorgeous Art That Says Nothing On Purpose

Digger is a confounding, gorgeous, and grotesque movie that dares to keep viewers guessing. Directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, the film follows oil magnate Digger Rockwell, played by Tom Cruise under heavy prosthetics. He deals with an earth shattering disaster alongside staffer Ganesh, played by Riz Ahmed, the president, played by John Goodman, and his sister Emma, played by Sandra Hüller. At first glance, the story looks like a familiar satire about greedy capitalists, but the plot is actually a clever misdirect.

The production design features eerie, whimsical sets that create an unsettling atmosphere, paired with a strange score and overwhelming sound design. Tom Cruise delivers a powerful monologue in a colosseum setting, completely losing himself in the role while still showing flashes of his usual superstar charisma. The supporting cast shines as well, particularly Jesse Plemons, whose unsettling presence and late film monologue help tie the entire experience together.
