Psyren Episode 1 Review: A Must Watch Mystery Premiere

Psyren has finally arrived, bringing the classic manga to the screen for the first time. The story follows Ageha Yoshina, a high schooler who earns cash by helping people solve their problems. His life takes a dark turn when he answers a mysterious phone booth and receives a red calling card labeled Psyren. This leads him straight into an urban legend about a secret society that supposedly transports unhappy people to a new world.

The premiere does a great job of introducing us to Ageha and the growing panic surrounding the Psyren rumors. We also meet his classmate Amamiya, who seems to know exactly how dangerous this secret group really is. The episode balances these character introductions with a sense of dread as people connected to the card start vanishing into thin air.

While the first episode focuses more on building mystery than showing off action, the visual quality is impressive. Studio Satelight provides smooth animation and detailed backgrounds that make the world feel grounded. The character designs feel a bit classic, which is a nod to the source material from 2007, but the animation style keeps things feeling modern and sharp.

The episode ends on a high note by throwing Ageha into an unknown world alongside Amamiya. With questions about the true purpose of Psyren and the nature of this mysterious death game left hanging, it is easy to see why fans are already hooked. If you enjoy survival stories with a heavy dose of intrigue, this is definitely one to keep on your watch list.
