Onimusha: Way of the Sword Brings Demon Slaying Back to Life
Capcom is reviving the classic Onimusha franchise with a cinematic new reboot featuring tactical samurai combat.
manhwa.newsAfter two decades away from the spotlight, the classic Onimusha series is making a return. Capcom is working on a new reboot titled Onimusha: Way of the Sword. This title aims to honor the roots of the original games while introducing modern gameplay mechanics and a more cinematic approach to its dark fantasy story.
The story centers on a version of Musashi Miyamoto who is brought to life with visual inspiration from the iconic actor Toshiro Mifune. As a reluctant hero trapped in a demon infested Kyoto, Musashi must use the powerful Oni Gauntlet to fight back against a corrupted force. The game promises a grounded, steady combat system that rewards players for reading their opponents instead of just button mashing.
Fans of the series will be happy to know that iconic features like soul absorption and the Oni Gauntlet are returning. However, the game also introduces metroidvania style zones to encourage exploration. While the combat feels measured and tactical, the developers have clarified that the game is not a punishing soulslike experience, focusing instead on rhythm and flow.
By blending traditional samurai film aesthetics with horror elements, the team hopes to capture the spirit of the early titles while keeping things fresh. There is no official release date yet, but this reboot looks like a promising next chapter for a beloved cult classic.
