Nightborn Brings Tense Motherhood Horror to Fantasia 2026
Director Hanna Bergholm returns with a chilling new fairytale about a mother whose newborn child might be something else entirely.
manhwa.newsNightborn follows Saga, played by Seidi Haarla, as she moves into her grandmother's remote forest home with her husband Jon, played by Rupert Grint. She dreams of a perfect family life, but her vision quickly crumbles after the birth of her first child. The baby is born covered in hair and exhibits strange, unsettling behavior that leaves Saga questioning her own sanity as those around her dismiss her growing fears.
The film leans into traditional troll folklore, framing the story as a modern take on the classic changeling myth. Seidi Haarla delivers a powerful performance, showing the transition from a hopeful mother to someone pushed to their limits. Her descent into isolation is matched by the unsettling production design, where a beautiful home slowly appears to rot from the inside out.
While the movie features strong performances and beautiful, eerie cinematography, it occasionally relies on familiar tropes. Some viewers might find the final act and the use of CGI a bit jarring compared to the grounded tension of the earlier scenes. Still, it is a compelling watch for fans of dark fairy tales and psychological horror.
Nightborn held its North American premiere at the 2026 Fantasia International Film Festival. Fans can look forward to streaming the movie exclusively on Shudder starting July 31, 2026.
