La Bola Negra is a visually striking film that weaves together three distinct eras of Spanish history. Directed by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the story draws inspiration from an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca and Alberto Conejero. The film follows Carlos in 1932, Sebastián during the Civil War in 1937, and a modern historian named Alberto who is trying to piece together his own family secrets. Every frame looks like a painting, using film grain and surreal lighting to capture the heavy atmosphere of each period.

The performances are a major highlight, especially from Milo Quifes and the rest of the cast. The middle segment set during the war is particularly powerful, as it follows Sebastián navigating life after a bombing and forming a bond with a prisoner of war named Rafael. Even with limited screen time, Penélope Cruz delivers a standout performance as singer Nené Romero, adding a layer of emotional depth that resonates throughout the story.

While the movie is undeniably beautiful, it does leave some questions unanswered. It touches on themes of trans identity and queer experiences across time, but it stops short of providing a full resolution to those threads. Some fans might find the lack of a clear moment of joy for its characters a bit bittersweet, as the film leans heavily into tragedy and longing.

Despite these minor pacing issues, the film succeeds as a poetic piece of cinema. It is a heartfelt project that honors history while showing how the past still shapes the present. You can watch La Bola Negra in theaters now, or catch it when it arrives on Netflix on December 2, 2026.
