Gears of War E Day Finally Brings Us to the Start of the War

After waiting twenty years, we are finally stepping into the boots of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the most iconic event in the series. Gears of War E Day throws us right into the chaos of the day the Locust emerged. Unlike later titles that focused on the broader war effort, this story feels personal and desperate. We see the COGs at their most vulnerable, struggling to understand a strange new enemy while trying to save civilians in a city that is quickly falling to pieces.

The gameplay feels like a welcome return to the roots of the franchise. It uses the familiar cover based mechanics we all know, but with some clever modern updates. One standout change is the active reload, which now feels more realistic. If you are using a Gnasher, you reload shell by shell. If you stop the action early, you only have a few rounds ready to go. The introduction of Open Districts also changes the flow of the game. These are dense, urban environments that reward you for exploring and helping trapped citizens, offering weapon mods that help you survive the growing threat.

While the atmosphere is spot on, the game does have a few quirks. The enemy variety feels a bit limited during the early stages, as you primarily face the same few types of Locust scouts. Additionally, the enemies are quite fast, making standard grenades feel tricky to land effectively. However, seeing the origin of legendary gear like the chainsaw equipped Lancer prototype is a genuine thrill for long time fans.

Overall, the game balances tension and action perfectly. The voice acting captures the genuine fear and confusion of soldiers who have no idea what they are fighting. Even knowing the dark future that awaits the people of Sera, playing through these early moments is incredibly exciting. This is shaping up to be the intense, gritty experience that fans have wanted for two decades.
