Former Blizzard Devs Unveil Dark Fantasy Game Arkheron
Blizzard veterans are mixing Greek mythology and competitive action in their new project, Arkheron.
manhwa.newsBonfire Studios is turning heads with its debut title, Arkheron. Led by Blizzard veteran Rob Pardo, the team is crafting a dark fantasy game that draws heavy inspiration from Greek mythology. The story follows lone souls in the afterlife who battle to reclaim lost memories. Those who succeed become powerful Eternals, though they are forever haunted by the weight of their past lives.
While the game features an isometric view that might remind fans of Diablo, the developers note that the gameplay experience is actually closer to a shooter. Pardo explains that the team wanted to combine the competitive nature of battle royale games with the skill based focus found in shooters. The game uses a unique reticle system, allowing players to aim their attacks with precision while navigating the environment.
The core gameplay currently centers on two modes, Ascension and Spires. In Ascension, 3v3 teams face off in a high stakes competition where they must secure beacons to move to higher floors. It functions like a tactical game of musical chairs rather than a standard battle royale, forcing players to choose between safe, quiet paths or risky, high reward combat encounters. Spires serves as an introductory experience for new players.
As the game continues through weekly playtests, the team faces the fun challenge of correcting player assumptions. Because of its dark aesthetic, many expect a traditional action RPG, but the actual mechanics provide a fresh, action packed twist. Fans of competitive multiplayer games should keep a close watch as development continues.
