It turns out our favorite mushroom explorer almost had a very different origin story. The director of Super Mario 3D World recently shared that the concept for Captain Toad was originally being developed as a Legend of Zelda project. The team loved the idea of a character who could not jump, but they struggled to make that fit with the classic Zelda gameplay loop.

The developers eventually realized the idea worked much better when they shifted it over to the Mario series. Since Captain Toad could not jump, the team had to get creative with camera angles and level design. They turned the stages into little dioramas that players could rotate to find secrets and hidden paths, which eventually became the core of Treasure Tracker.

This shift changed everything for the little explorer. By leaning into the puzzle elements instead of the platforming action found in most Mario games, the team created a unique experience that fans still love today. It is fascinating to imagine what a Zelda version of this game might have looked like, but it seems like things worked out for the best.
