A Fresh Take on Christie: Why Tommy and Tuppence Works

Agatha Christie fans have seen countless adaptations, but the BritBox original series Agatha Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence offers something refreshingly grounded. Set in the modern day, the show follows the titular pair as they reunite at a wedding, only to stumble upon a murder that kickstarts their career as amateur investigators. With the help of Tommy’s sharp witted Aunt Ada, the duo revives a family detective agency while working to clear the names of the wrongly accused.

At the heart of the show is the undeniable chemistry between Antonia Thomas and Josh Dylan. While the series follows a classic murder of the week format, the real draw is the complicated history between the leads. They share a deep, long standing connection that complicates their professional partnership, especially as they try to balance their feelings with Tuppence’s existing marriage to a successful Hollywood husband.

The series does a great job of showing Tuppence’s struggle between the safe, stable life she built in the States and the thrill of the life she is building back in the UK with Tommy. Imelda Staunton steals her scenes as Aunt Ada, acting as both a detective mentor and a blunt advisor for the pair’s romantic tension. It is a smart, charming series that honors the spirit of the original stories while finding its own modern voice.
