Fans of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book might be surprised to learn that the game had a very different feel during its early development. In a recent interview, the team behind the title shared that Yoshi actually took damage during the initial creation phase.

Senior producer Etsunobu Ebisu, along with director Masahiro Yamamoto and producer Hisashi Nogami, explained that they originally included traditional failure mechanics. However, they soon noticed that these elements discouraged players from exploring and trying new things with the various creatures.

To fix this, the team shifted their design philosophy to focus on curiosity instead of punishment. Removing the risk of a game over allowed players to experiment freely, which is exactly the experience the creators wanted to prioritize. It is a fascinating look at how small design changes can shape the final personality of a game.
