Given the franchise is enjoying a surge in popularity, many fans feel it is the perfect moment for Major Motoko Kusanagi and the crew at Section 9 to return to our screens. There is so much potential for a modern title to capture the gritty, high tech atmosphere that defines this classic series.

A new game could break away from standard RPG tropes by letting players start as elite operatives rather than rookies. Since the team is already at their peak, the gameplay could focus on high stakes missions and tactical action rather than tedious leveling. We imagine a structure that allows players to switch between different specialists like Batou for heavy combat, Togusa for investigations, or Ishikawa for hacking duties, truly utilizing the diverse talents of the entire Section 9 squad.

The series also offers incredible narrative freedom. Whether a developer chooses to pursue linear missions or a sprawling open area to explore in a Fuchikoma, the potential for branching stories is huge. By including consequence driven choices, a game could reflect the philosophical and often unforgiving nature of the source material. It is high time for a new project that respects the history of these characters while bringing them into the modern gaming era.
