Whalefall Review: Great Survival Thriller With Weak Exterior

Written and directed by Brian Duffield and based on Daniel Kraus's book, Whalefall offers a thrilling survival story. Austin Abrams stars as Jay, a diver who gets swallowed by a whale. The film shines when Jay tries to escape from inside the massive creature. The claustrophobic sets look disgustingly organic, the sound design builds perfect tension, and the lighting cleverly balances darkness with realism. Fans of intense thrillers will love these gripping survival moments.

However, the movie struggles outside the whale. The outside CGI model looks fake and clashes with the beautiful underwater photography and California shots. The emotional core relies on flashbacks of Jay and his demanding father, played by Josh Brolin. Unfortunately, Brolin plays the character as overly aggressive, and the heavy dialogue relies too much on exposition rather than natural conversation. This makes the family drama feel like a drag.

Whalefall is a mixed experience that splits fans between an amazing survival concept and a rough emotional exterior. With better writing and stronger emotional beats, it could have been an all time classic. Instead, it lands as a fun watch for fans of creature features when it arrives in theaters on October 16th, 2026.
