Legion of Super Heroes Issue 1 offers a clean slate for fans who have wanted to understand this futuristic team from the very beginning. After past corruption left the galaxy in a dark place, this new series resets the timeline. Writer Joshua Williamson introduces us to our heroes before they are officially a team, showing them spread across different planets and living very different lives.

The story moves at a great pace, balancing individual character introductions with a central murder mystery that ties the galaxy together. We get to meet early versions of characters like Brainiac 1 to 5, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl. It is refreshing to see them as regular people rather than established icons. Williamson really focuses on their personal struggles and connections, setting the stage for them to eventually unite.

Hayden Sherman delivers incredible art that makes each planet feel distinct and lived in. The panel choices are especially unique, using rounded borders that force you to slow down and appreciate the details on every page. Tamra Bonvillain adds vibrant, intense colors that bring a sense of energy and hope to these new settings.

While the series is a fantastic jumping on point, it does feel like it misses an opportunity for better character variety in terms of appearance. Even so, the creative team has done a great job building a new future from the ground up. If you are looking for a way into the complex history of the Legion, this is the perfect place to start.
