Royal Betrothal Review: A Chaotic Mix of Politics and Romance

Royal Betrothal brings a familiar mix of political intrigue and palace romance to the screen. The story follows Meng Tinghui, an orphan who survives a difficult childhood to become a smart and tough official in the Censorate. Her path crosses with the emperor, Ying Gua, who actually saved her from traffickers years prior. While the premise of a shared past and a complex conspiracy holds promise, the series often feels rushed. Important plot points struggle to land with the weight they deserve because the story moves too quickly.

Wu Jinyan turns in a solid performance as Tinghui, especially when her character walls begin to break down under pressure. However, the show faces issues with the casting of the leading man. Chen Zheyuan struggles to bring necessary nuance to his role as the emperor. Because his performance remains mostly unreadable throughout, the central romance between the two leads lacks the spark and believability the story needs to succeed.

Interestingly, the secondary romances are where the show truly finds its heart. The relationship between Shen Zhishu and Yan Fuzhi feels much more earned and rewarding than the main couple. Even the dramatic storyline involving Di Nian and Shen Zhili offers a compelling watch, despite some dark moments. These supporting narratives suggest that the show might have been better served by focusing less on the core betrothal and more on the wider cast.

Ultimately, Royal Betrothal is a mixed bag. It features a great performance from Liang Yongqi as the versatile Yin Qing and interesting political stakes, yet it stumbles under its own weight. If you enjoy period dramas with plenty of court politics, you might find something to appreciate here, but be prepared for a rocky romantic journey.
