Ratatan Review: A Quirky and Charming Rhythm Roguelite
Ratatan mixes rhythm game mechanics with roguelite chaos to deliver a fun spiritual successor to Patapon.
manhwa.newsIf you love games that make you say just one more run, Ratatan might be your next favorite obsession. Developed by TVT Co. and Ratata Arts, this title mixes rhythm mechanics with roguelite action. You play as a Ratatan leading an army of small, one eyed creatures called Cobun through strange worlds toward a place called The Everafter. Fans of the classic PSP game Patapon will immediately recognize the distinct art direction and rhythm based command system.
The gameplay relies on keeping a beat to order your Cobun into battle. These loyal followers are hilarious, charging into fights with nonsensical battle cries while remaining completely oblivious to danger if you miss a beat. You also travel alongside a giant airship named Fortrun, which offers passive healing during tough fights. Between runs, you can upgrade weapons, customize your Cobun, and try out different Ratatan characters to keep things fresh.
While the procedural generation and fun rhythm loop make early runs exciting, the game can feel repetitive over time. You always travel through the same five worlds, meaning the opening stages become very easy the more you play. Even so, the colorful visuals, charming humor, and satisfying combat loop make it worth checking out for fans of quirky roguelite adventures.
