Practical Magic 2 Fails to Recapture the Original Movie's Magic

It has been twenty eight years since the Owens sisters first graced our screens. While fans were excited to return to the world of the Owens family, the new sequel, Practical Magic 2, unfortunately feels like a rehash of familiar tropes. Directed by Susanne Bier, the film attempts to build on the original curse, but the story ends up feeling remarkably similar to other magical coming of age tales rather than finding a unique identity of its own.

The plot follows Sally Owens as she deals with the return of the family curse, leading her to shield her own children from their magical heritage. When a new crisis forces a road trip, the film relies on a series of predictable twists that offer little in the way of surprise. Even the mystery surrounding the villain feels thin, as the antagonist is easy to spot the moment they appear on screen.

Despite the lackluster script, the cast brings a lot of heart to the project. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman slip back into their roles with ease, proving their chemistry as sisters remains the highlight of the franchise. Veterans like Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest provide charming performances, while newcomers Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Xolo Maridueña do their best with the limited material they were given.
