We finally got a real look at Phantom Blade Zero, and it looks incredible. S Games has been working on this project for 15 years, and that long wait seems to be paying off. While the visuals are stunning, there is a lot more going on under the surface. It feels like a mix of high speed action cinema and deep martial arts storytelling.

You play as a skilled killer named Soul who is on borrowed time. After a brutal fight with his brother, his heart is replaced by a mechanical one that only gives him 66 days to live. He has to use that time to stop a massive conspiracy in the martial arts underworld known as the Wulin. The game is heavily inspired by Berserk, which explains why the setting feels so dark and gritty.

Even though there is a countdown, the game does not rush you. You can explore various areas that are full of side quests and hidden bosses. The developers used a mix of Unreal Engine 5 and beautiful hand drawn animation to tell the story. You use special bells to save your progress, upgrade your gear, and even relive memories through cinematics that look as good as any top tier donghua.

The map design is very clever. It is not just a straight line from start to finish, and you are encouraged to go back to old areas once you get stronger. Between the fast paced combat and the mystery surrounding the past of Soul, this is definitely one to keep an eye on. It is shaping up to be a layered experience that focuses as much on its characters as its flashy moves.
