Klara And The Sun Movie Review: A Charming But Flawed Adaptation
The new film adaptation of Klara and the Sun brings great charm and a standout Jenna Ortega performance despite some messy plotting.
manhwa.newsFans waiting to see the film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's popular book can finally catch Klara and the Sun. Directed by Taika Waititi and co written by Dahvi Waller, the movie follows an outdated robotic friend named Klara, played by Jenna Ortega. Klara spends her days praying to the sun and hoping a teenager will buy her. That wish comes true when a sick teen named Josie spots her in a shop window and takes her home.
The movie tackles big questions about whether being faulty means you are broken. Josie is dealing with a severe illness from a childhood procedure, and her mother Chrissy worries about keeping Klara around. Meanwhile, the neighborhood boy Rick feels like an outcast because he missed out on the same medical procedure. These characters all deal with personal flaws, but the film struggles to wrap up their stories neatly. Several plots, including tensions with the housekeeper Melania and Rick's feelings for Josie, are left hanging by the time credits roll.
Despite the loose ends and some cheap humor, the movie shines because of Jenna Ortega. She brings incredible warmth and total dedication to the role of Klara, making her optimistic prayers to the sun feel entirely genuine. It may not answer all of its own questions, but fans of the original story and sci fi drama will likely enjoy the sweet ride.
