Ryan Murphy has officially brought Bret Easton Ellis to television with the adaptation of The Shards Season 1. The series follows an affluent group of high school seniors in nineteen eighties Los Angeles whose lives are shaken by a string of break ins, abductions, and murders. At the center of the story is Bret, an aspiring writer played by Igby Rigney, who becomes obsessed with a mysterious new student named Robert Mallory. Alongside an ensemble cast that includes Evan Rachel Wood and Kaia Gerber, the show blends glossy visual flair with heavy teenage paranoia.

The first few episodes start off with real promise, pulling viewers into a dark murder mystery mixed with coming of age drama. Unfortunately, the show loses some of its focus as the season continues. Instead of digging deep into the serial killings, the episodes often lean heavily into petty teen angst, jealousy, and interpersonal drama. This creates an uneven narrative where the characters sometimes feel detached from the actual terror happening around them.

Bret is an intensely pretentious protagonist, but his underlying insecurities and fears about his sexuality make him strangely relatable.
