Insidious: Out of the Further Struggles to Keep the Franchise Alive

The sixth installment of the Insidious saga has arrived, and it unfortunately makes a strong case for the series to finally call it quits. Directed by Jacob Chase, the film follows Gemma, a dental hygienist who moves back into her childhood home with her daughter. The story centers on their encounter with a malevolent entity from the spectral plane known as The Further, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

While the film shows flashes of brilliance through creative set pieces like a double mouthed X ray and dark, static filled voids, these moments are too brief. The movie frequently sacrifices suspense for jump scares that often feel unintentional rather than frightening. Instead of building a thick, dread filled atmosphere, the story rushes through its best ideas to reach hollow action scenes.

The character drama between the scares feels flat and stiff, making it hard to care about the people on screen. Even the return of fan favorite medium Elise Rainier feels more like a forced exposition dump than a satisfying addition to the plot. By the time the final act arrives, the film loses any sense of danger, turning into a loud and confusing mess that feels more like a theme park ride than a horror movie.

Ultimately, this entry struggles to justify its existence. It ignores opportunities for fresh storytelling and instead clings to well worn cliches that have lost their impact. For a franchise that has run for six films, this chapter suggests that the creative well is dry. Fans looking for a genuine fright will likely be left disappointed by this lackluster experience.
