6.9manhwa.newsBlack Torch Episode 3, titled What Is My Name, marks a step forward for the series as it finally gives us the action we have been waiting for. After a tense ambush during a van transport, Jiro and Rago are allowed to break free from their constraints to help Ichika fight off mononoke. This sequence serves as a refreshing change of pace from the heavy exposition that defined the first two episodes.
We also get a better look at Ichika and her tragic past. A flashback explains her deep mistrust of mononoke, which helps the audience understand her character a bit better. Once the dust settles, the story shifts toward the formation of the Black Torch task force. Jiro is officially brought on board, leading to introductions with his new teammates, Hana Usami and Reiji Kirihara. The chemistry between these young characters is already bubbling, especially with a heated conflict between Jiro and Reiji teased just as the credits roll.
While this episode is the strongest one yet, there is still a sense of frustration regarding the pacing. With only twelve episodes in the total run, the series is spending a lot of time on setup. We have plenty of background information now, but the plot needs to accelerate to make the most of the remaining time.
There is clearly a lot of potential here for a great action series. The team at the Bureau of Espionage has all the ingredients for success, but the show needs to stop pausing for explanations and start moving forward. We are looking forward to seeing how the team dynamic develops in the next episode.
